John W. Nick Foundation Inc.-Www
I was referred to this site by someone who visited my guestbook recently. I am an 8-year survivor of breast cancer and I have a Breast Cancer Awareness page to stress the importance of awareness, self-examination and early detection in both women and men! After reading this page, however, I've decided to add a new page specifically to promote Male Breast Cancer Awareness! I will begin work on it over the holidays and hopefully have it completed by January 4, '99. If any of you have a specific links that you think should be added to this Male Breast Cancer page, please email me. I think Nancy, Dave and Theresa and LaWanda, are all doing a wonderful job in getting the word out. I hope to be able to add my voice to theirs. Remember, knowledge is empowerment....be PRO-active and not reactive! HUGS...Cheri

As 2 1/2 year BC survivor it is great to find a place and people who know men can get breast cancer. I spent the first 2 years asking if there were support groups etc. for men all I got for an answer was " no ,I didn't know men get breast cancer" This was from a number of breast cancer support groups. So keep up the good work. We need it!

Your support is essential in order to educate people about the dangers of not being informed about male breast cancer. I ONLY wish that I knew ten years ago what I know today-perhaps I would not be known as the "widow Nick"

The page is a winner in cutting through the silence that is so deafening, the title of a screenplay I've written about my experience with the horrific disease. Bob Stafford started it, now it's up to us to finish it. Congratulations on behalf of all target audiences in making this not just a women's disease or a man's disease. It's a family issue that is finally being addressed. And like Yogi Berra said: "It ain't over 'till it's over." Congratulations!

I have been volunteering to help Nancy with the mailings of the Awareness for Male and Female Breast Cancer books and other information also enclosed, and let me tell you its alot of work for a person to do alone. That's what Nancy has been doing. This is a worthwild organization to donate to. Before I met Nancy, I did not know that Men can get breast cancer and also die from it just like women. This type of information needs to be known to everyone all over the world. I watch the Rosie O'Donald Show just about every day, and in the month of October they had Breast Cancer awareness month, not one mention of men. Nancy also wrote a letter to Rosie O'Donald and no response was ever received back. We all need to help Nancy in her fight to let everyone aware that Men also are susceptible to Breast Cancer before it happens in your family!!

I am a friend of Dave Lyons. I get too emotional sometimes when bad things happen to good people, but seeing how he is touching so many lives right now, I believe this may be one of God's intentions with him. I thank Him for giving Dave such an awesome and supportive wife and family!

Dave Lyons is my brother. Words cannot express how relieved I am that Dave's cancer was caught early. A few months after Dave's surgery our Mother was also diagnosed with breast cancer. She has had surgery and radiation treatments, and her prognosis is good. I now check myself regularly and cannot stress enough how important it is for everyone, men and women alike, to be aware. If you find something, don't be put off by hurried doctors and "mangled care!"

The stories of breast cancer survivors are very useful. They let a man know he needs to be aggressive if he finds a lump despite protestations he may get from physicians. One item that would be nice (although I'm sure it is available elsewhere) would be instructions for palpating one's breast to look for lumps.

Hi, my name is La Wanda Hill and if you're looked thru this wonderful new site, you seen the link to my homepage. I hope you had time to visit there. You see, I'm the daughter of a breast cancer survivor. I tell a little bit about my daddy's story on my homepage. I'm VERY happy to say that we stood in line for a miracle when my daddy was diagnosed and we got one. My daddy, now 74, has been cancer free since his mastectomy just over two years ago. And, you know, I just about ran myself ragged trying to find a way to get the word out that men DO get breast cancer. The Pam Honsinger at Keepinthefaith lead me to the MBC mailing list and Bill Stafford. From there I met Nancy Nick of the Nick Foundation and many other wonderful friends. One of my friend on the MBC list just lost her father days ago to this terrible disease. Nancy Ord, we are still praying for you and your family.
So I'm here to shout MEN DO GET BREAST CANCER. And I'm here to thank B. Stafford for the MBC mailings, Nancy Nick for all her work, Pam Honsinger for leading me to the right people regarding this important issue, and to Dave and Teresa Lyons for setting up this site for the Nick Foundation. Just like a friend said to me recently....a friend I met at the MBC e-mail group, one step at a time and we'll be able to cover a lot of ground. Welcome to the group Cookie. You're about to make some life long friends.
Thanks again to everybody. God Bless you All!!

Great site - the word has to get out that men DO get breast cancer. Like J.W. Nick, my cancer was missed because a good doctor didn't think men could get breast cancer.

I love having a breast cancer site that is for both men and women. My husband is a breast cancer survivor and it is good to meet other men out there. It can be lonely at times for our men. Thank you so much for this wonderful site.

Hi, My husband Jerry was dignoies with male breast cancer just this Feb. His treatment consisted of 4 cycles of chemo then in July he has a modified radical mastectomy. This month he just completed his 1st of 4 more cycles of chemo. The oncologist calls them assurance measures. We feel very fortunate to have such a super cancer DR. It was and still is very scary because there wasn't any information to read up on this disease. It all pretained to women. My husband felt very uncomfortable saying he had breast cancer as no one seemed to have heard of it in males. Thanks to Nancy Nick's I will be able to put these wonder booklets that she has had made up in the North Puget Onocolgy. This will help people become aware that breast cancer is not just a female disease. Bless you Nancy.

Breast Cancer Survivor: yes: 4 great years
John Nick didn't have to die. It makes me very sad to read this, and yet very happy to know I had a knowledgeable GP who sent me immediately for a mammogram. We should all be so lucky. I've read and studied like crazy since my diagnosis at age 46. The results: the keys are early diagnosis, vitamins, exercise, and personal peace--- including the elimination of the sources of fear, guilt, and anger.
